Small Rice Cooker Top 5 Buyer’s Guide 2024

What Is The Rice Cooker?

A rice cooker is an appliance that uses water poured on the bottom of it that is heated up quickly to a boiling temperature. The boiling water creates steam that cooks the rice to a perfect fluffy consistancy.

You add your water and rice to the rice cooker and stir, cover it and set your cooking time. You can add other liquids such as broths and milks in place of water to make it more flavorful. You can also add spices, meats and ingredients such as tomatoes, onions and other veggies to create a meal.

Many rice cookers will also come with a steaming basket that sits above the cooking rice. The steaming basket allows you to cook other foods with steam such as fish, chicken, beef and chunky veggies. This is a quick way to create a full meal easily with one appliance.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed the above small rice cooker reviews. As you can see with all the reviews many mini or small rice cookers offer many of the same features as the larger ones. A rice cooker can be used for so much more than just rice and is a real benefit to have in the kitchen.

I use my rice cookers at least 3 times a week for not only rice but for slow cooked stews, soups, steamed fish, potatoes and veggies. I personally love the benefits of a healthy meal and the ease of making the fresh healthy meals. I have 2 rice cookers, one mini and one large, I chose both with the steamer baskets. The steamer baskets are a must if you want to make a whole meal with one appliance.

Just like a slow cooker a rice cooker doesn’t heat up the kitchen on those hot days and everything can be put into it, set for a delayed start, walk away and come home to a healthy home cooked meal.

If you have any questions or comments you’d like to share please leave them below! Thanks again for visiting Device Gourmet, have a great day 🙂

What Is The Rice Cooker?

A rice cooker is an electric appliance that uses hot steam to cook rice to a perfect fluffy consistancy. Both the heat and moisture from the steam cooks all varieties of rice until it is moist and the perfect texture is reached.

Some rice cookers are pressurized as well which means that they cook all the same things that a basic rice cooker will but the pressurized rice cookers do it in less time. This makes them a more efficient choice if you want your foods done quicker and still have everything come out perfectly.

You can find many functions with a rice cooker including the ability to steam fresh veggies, meats, poultry, fish, potatoes and even eggs. If you purchase a rice cooker with an included steam basket you will have the ability to cook a whole meal at the same time.

A rice cooker cooks not only all varieties of rice but whole grains and lentils as well. You can make all kinds of recipes with the ability to add these other wholesome foods to your rice.

When using a rice cooker it’s important not to mix different types of rice, whole grains and lentils together unless you’re sure that they need the same amount of time to cook. If you add different ingredients together that don’t cook for the same amount of time you will end up with mushy foods.

Not only does it cook other lentils and grains but you can also cook potatoes, veggies, poultry, meats and fish in a steaming method. You can even cook eggs with a rice cooker, either scrambled or hard boiled.

You can look for a rice cooker that has a steaming tray included to cook both your rice, grains or lentils along with your veggies, meats, poultry or fish.

Rice cookers cook with steam there is no need for extra oils, butters or fats to cook the food keeping them healthy with less fats, sodium and carbohydrates from additives used in conventional cooking methods.

What Does A Rice Cooker Do?

A rice cooker cooks foods by boiling the added water or liquid of choice, causing steam which then cooks the foods that you have in it.

There are different rice cooker models that you can choose from. Some models are very basic so you would just add the amount of liquid you need to cook the amount of rice or other lenil or grain you choose. You would just press a start button and the rice cooker will boil the water causing steam and cook your food perfectly.

A multifunctional rice cooker can do many other things such as slow cooked sauces, soups, veggies, meats, potatoes, poultry and fish. The multifunctional rice cookers typically have a steaming tray allowing you to cook more than one thing at the same time along with an automatic keep warm function to keep foods at the perfect temperature until your ready to eat.

Is A Rice Cooker The Same As A Slow Cooker?

No, a rice cooker and a slow cooker are not the same thing.

A slow cooker is surrounded by heat on all sides and bottom when in use. They are meant to cook foods slowly over a long period of time so that all of the flavors are incorporated while cooking. Slow cookers do not steam food but slow cook with a set heating temperature and timer.

A rice cooker cooks the foods with steam and need a liquid base to allow steam to cook the chosen foods. A rice cooker will bring the liquid to a boiling temperature and cook foods with the boiling liquid and steam much quicker than a slow cooker.

What Is A Pressure Rice Cooker?

A pressure rice cooker quickly cooks rice by raising the temperature to boil liquid quickly along with the pressurized cooking. These two factors together allow the water to boil up to 250* which causes a lot of steam that is trapped and pressurized, allowing foods to cook quicker than a regular rice cooker.

A pressurized rice cooker also keeps foods from drying out due to the high heat and steam which cooks foods evenly and quickly, while maintaining the moisture in the foods.

What Is A Jar Rice Cooker?

A jar rice cooker is a Japanese rice cooker. This isn’t an actual jar but a more advanced rice cooker made in Japan and is available to purchase here in the US.

The jar rice cookers are much more expensive than the basic rice cookers and the pressure rice cookers. They will run from 150.00 up to over $550.00 or more, but they are much more advanced than the typical rice cookers we see in kitchens everyday.

The jar rice cookers offer a wide range of options to cook every piece of rice perfectly every time with high steam and pressurized cooking combined.

You will find that some of the jar rice cookers have AI (artificial intelligence), which learns how food is cooking and automatically adjusts the cooking cycle to cook everything perfectly with no help from you.

Along with the AI intelligence the jar cookers typically have many other one button features for cooking multiple varieties of rice, porridge and even sushi.

What Is A Japanese Rice Cooker?

A Japanese rice cooker is also known as a jar rice cooker. They offer a wider range of cooking options than the everyday rice cookers but they also offer a larger variety of options. The Japanese rice cookers are known for making perfectly cooked rice every time. Learn more about the jar rice cookers

Is A Rice Cooker Worth It?

This is a question that only you can answer because it depends on what you would use it for. If you are a huge fan of rice dishes and hate doing it in the microwave or stovetop, then yes, it would definitely be something that you could get a lot of use from.

Rice cookers make very delicious, fluffy, moist rice every time with no fuss of watching over a stove or microwave. Even when making rice on a stovetop or microwave you typically won’t get the right consistancy that a rice cooker does and a lot of times it’s dried out or undercooked.

If you are on the fence about purchasing a rice cooker because you think that’s all it does your wrong. A rice cooker can steam meats, poultry, fish, veggies, potatoes, eggs, beans and grains for healthy foods without any added fats from oils or butters.

Many rice cookers will also come with a steamer basket that sets above the rice so that you can cook other foods at the same time. With the steamer baskets it makes it very easy and efficient to make a complete healthy meal with the rice you like, a meat or fish choice and some veggies.

In Conclusion

Thank you for visiting Device Gourmet and I hope that we were able to help you understand what a rice cooker is and the different types that are available. If you have anything that you would like to share about your experience with rice cookers or if you have any questions, please leave them below.

What is The Best Food Processor 2024 Review

A food processor is a must have in your kitchen if you enjoy making lots of fresh meals, snacks and baked goods. Finding the best food processor that can take away the time consuming duties of dicing, cutting, crushing and mincing, just to name a few things, out of the preparation of your recipes is a must in today’s busy life styles.

Food processors can cost as little as $50 for a small unit to a few hundred if you’re looking for one that can be used everyday and withstand the daily tasks you have planned for it! They can be used for grinding meats, making nut butters, kneading doughs, making purees and so much more.

If you’re just looking to shred some veggies for a salad or crush some nuts for baking the perfect cookie recipe then you won’t need a higher end food processor. You should be considering a lower priced, but still great quality food processor. Let’s dive into some of the things to consider before you buy.

What Should You Consider Before Investing in The Best Food Processor For You

  1. How large of a feeding chute do you need to accommodate your ingredients to be processed? If your going to be using smaller ingredients like herbs, nuts, carrots, celery, etc., then a smaller chute will work just fine for you. However, if you’re going to be pushing zucchini’s or other larger produce chunks through the chute, you’ll need to make sure that it can accomodate your needs.
  2. What blades do you want included with your food processor? Are you looking to dice, shred, slice or grate your ingredients? Some food processors offer a larger variety of blades to complete these tasks while some only offer a basic blade allowing you to shred or slice in one size.
  3. You’ll want to make sure that your food processor offers a pulsing action so that you can control the amount of chopping or pureing of your ingredients.
  4. How large do you need? The food processors come in a wide range of sizes allowing them to be compatible in everyone’s kitchen no matter how small or large your kitchen is. You can find a small 4 cup machine or a machine that can handle up to 20 cups of ingredients per use. The size you choose is completely a personal choice for you, the cook.
  5. Make sure the motor is strong enough to handle the jobs that you intend to use it for. If you’re looking to make doughs with your food processor you will need a 600 watt motor at least, to complete the job efficiently without worrying about burning out the motor.
  6. You’ll want to make sure that your machine is dishwasher safe so that your cleanup is as easy as your ingredient preparation was using your food processor. Keep in mind that your blades shouldn’t be put in a dishwasher they should be hand washed keeping your blades from becoming dull.
  7. Some food processors have push buttons instead of a smooth touchpad for your controls. You should really consider only buying one with the smooth touchpad controls because your cleanup is much easier and you won’t need to worry about food getting stuck between the buttons.
  8. What is the warranty on the food processor that your interested in? Majority of the food processors out there have at least a limited 1 year warranty. Larger brands like kitchenaid and cuisinart offer extended warranties which also cover the motors if they burn out. If you find that the food processor you choose has one of the extended warranties and that the motor is covered on it, you can bet that it’s a very good appliance that will last.
  9. Make sure that the food processor that you choose has a wider base so that it’s not wobbly when you’re using it. Just keep in mind that your pushing ingredients through a shoot and you don’t need to be balancing your food processor while trying to push your ingredients steadily through the chute.
  10. The final thing to consider before investing in your food processor is that you absolutely love the color and design of it. This is a larger kitchen appliance and can be a bit pricey depending on what you need it to do for you so you want it to make you smile when you look at it on your countertop.

What Can You Expect In Each Food Processor Review?

How Much It WeighsThe weight of the base unit is important because it will keep the food processor steadier while in use/it is better the heavier it is especially when using heavier ingredients such as doughs
How Strong The Motor IsThe stronger the motor the better it can do the jobs of kneading, grinding and chopping heavy ingredients such as, doughs, meats and frozen foods
What Size The Feed Chute IsThe feeding chute size will matter to those wanting to use larger whole ingredients such as squash, cucumbers, bricks of cheese, etc., the larger the feed chute the less prep work is needed to make them the right size to fit
What Blades Are IncludedDepending on the models food processors can come with more blade varieties to do more things. So pay attention to the included blades so that you know you’re getting a food processor that will do what you need
How Many Cups Does It HoldFood processors come in different sizes and the sizes are measured by how many cups of ingredients it can hold. The sizes can vary from a 2 cup capacity up to 20+ cups
What Is The Warranty OfferedThis is important to protect your purchase in case something goes wrong. Some of the food processors offer only a limited warranty but others will give you the option to purchase an extended warranty
What Colors Are AvailableThe colors are important for a lot of us so that a larger appliance will blend with our kitchen decor especially if it will be left out on the countertop

Some Common Questions & Answers About Food Processors

  1. Can you grind meat in a food processor?
  2. Can you put ice in a food processor?
  3. Is a food processor the same as a food chopper?
  4. Can you use a food processor as a blender?
  5. Which is better a food processor or a blender?

Can You Grind Meat In A Food Processor?

Yes, you can grind meat with a food processor. It is recommended that you chill the blade that you’re using in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before using to grind the meat.

It is also recommended that you cut the meat you are going to grind in 1-2″ cubes and put into your freezer for about an hour. You will still want the meat to be softer inside, not completely frozen and the edges of the cubed meat should be firm to the touch. This will make the meat blend well together and thoroughly.

This will grind your meat into a hamburger consistancy and give you the ability to mix different meats together for different flavors as well as let you control the amount of fats that are in the final product.

Can You Put Ice In A Food Processor?

Yes, you can use ice in your food processor. The finished product will be like ice they use for slushies and can be used for mixed drinks, smoothies and flavored ice treats.

Is A Food Processor The Same As A Food Chopper?

No, the food processor and the food chopper are not the same thing but they have similarities.

A food chopper is a smaller, basic appliance that typically come with only 1 blade to chop and dice your foods. It has the capabilities of making purees, dicing and chopping foods just like a food processor. These are typically smaller than standard food processors and cheaper. If you only need to chop and dice and don’t care about the slicing, grinding and shredding capabilities that a food processor offers then you would be just fine with a food chopper.

A food processor comes with at least 2 blades, one for shredding, (typically reversible for 2 sizes) and one for dicing along with a chopping blade. Some food processor models can also come with a dough blade to knead doughs and a french frie cutting disk.

Some of the key differences between the food chopper and a food processor are the food processors have a feeding tube to continually add ingredients while it’s on. The food choppers have a lid that goes on after you add your ingredients that you want chopped. The food processors also have stronger motors to handle larger amounts of foods and tasks such as kneading dough, making cookie batters and grinding meats.

Can You Use A Food Processor As A Blender?

Yes, you can use a food processor as a blender but you won’t get the same texture for smoothies, purees and sauces that you do with a blender.

A food processor has different blades compared to a blender. The food processors blades are flatter than a blender’s blade which have curved sharper edged blades to crush and chop ingredients until they are creamy smooth.

A food processor handles drier, firm ingredients very well to chop, shred, slice and grind ingredients together. The food processor will handle ice much like a blender crushing it into fine ice for things like slushies.

If you are looking for a kitchen appliance that can make milkshakes, smoothies and other creamy drinks then you will be better off with a blender, that’s what they are intended to do.

Which Is Better A Food Processor Or A Blender?

This really a matter of what you want to make. If you are looking to make purees, sauces, creamy dips, smoothies and milkshake type foods then you will want to have a blender. The blender has the blades to break foods for these types of foods easily with the sharp pointed, curved blades.

If you are looking for the ability to shred, dice, chop, grind and make doughs easily and quickly then a food processor is what you will need. The food processors come with multiple blades to make all of these jobs easy and quick with minimal effort.

The Coffee Maker Keurig 2024 Reviews

The Keurig’s coffee makers have become a staple in many kitchens.  The options of being able to brew a single cup of hot coffee, tea or hot cocoa at the push of a button and even a cold brew capability in many of the designs, is a life saver for those who like to have the fresh brewed taste with every cup.

What Is The Keurig Coffee Maker & Where Is It Made?

Keurig Inc. was founded in 1992 in Massachusetts. They are the original creators of the single serve brewing coffee maker and single serve coffee pot manufacturing company.  Keurig Dr. Pepper manufactures all of the Keurig coffee makers in America.

John Sylvan and Peter Dragone, both had backgrounds in engineering and wanted a way to make coffee that tasted freshly brewed and not bitter and stale like office coffee tastes as it sits over time. They eventually invented the Keurig coffee machine in 1981 and had it patented in 1997.

The Keurig company is now known as the Keurig Green Mountain company since they merged together in 2016. In 2018 Keurig Green Mountain merged with the Dr. Pepper Snapple group which is now the third largest beverage company in North America.

In 1998 the first Keurig coffee maker and the K-cup pods were released to the public. They were marketed toward commercial and office use in the beginning and branched out with brewers for home use in 2006. Now the keurig coffee pot is a staple in almost all kitchens with its versatility of making all varieties of coffee whether hot or cold perfectly.

The Keurig’s have come a long way from when they were initially offered to the public.  Now you can choose a Keurig that brews a cup, mug or entire carafe at the touch of a button.  So if you find a variety that you like and want to make more at one time, you can and without the burnt taste that most coffee makers leave at the bottom of the pot.

Best Keurig Pods You Can Use With The Coffee Maker Keurig

The best Keurig pods to use with coffee maker Keurig really depends on your taste. There are so many varieties that you can choose from, since all pods are usable with the Keurig coffee makers. Green Mountain is a favorite for many people but there are many other brands that are considered favorites for the coffee maker Keurig. Below are some of the top brands of k-cup pods offered on the market today that are owned by Keurig Dr. Pepper.

  • Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
  • Donut Shop
  • Barista Prima Coffeehouse
  • Gloria Jeans Coffees
  • Cinnabon
  • Kahlúa
  • Krispy Kreme
  • McCafe
  • Newman’s Own
  • Panera Bread At Home
  • Revv
  • Swiss Miss
  • Tully’s Coffee

Those are just a few of the different brands that carry K-pods for the Keurig. You will find many stores and restaurants offer their own coffee pods as well. It’s really a matter of individual taste for you to find the perfect blend for your tastebuds.

Keep in mind that K-pods don’t only come in coffee flavors, you can find, hot chocolate pods, tea pods, latte pods, cappuccino pods and even soup pods. The Keurig doesn’t limit itself to basic coffee.

Another option of using the K-cups is using the refillable K-cup filter that comes with all Keurigs. The refillable filter allows you to use your favorite coffee. Just place your ground coffee inside the filter and snap it into the K-cup holder, brew just as if you were using a disposable K-cup. You can have a fresh cup of coffee with the Keurigs whether you use your own ground coffee or disposable K-cups. After you’re finished you can just rinse out the filter and holder to use again for your next cup of coffee.

Electric Spiralizer 2024 Reviews

What Is An Electric Spiralizer?

An electric spiralizer is a machine that cuts your veggies, certain fruits and potatoes into different types of noodles.  You can use the noodles for cooking healthier by replacing them for regular cuts of spaghetti noodles.

Why Were The Spiralizers Created?

Spiralizers were created as a way to make everyday noodles healthier by replacing the regular pastas with the guilt free low carbohydrate veggie style noodles. The spiralizers aren’t just a great thing for healthier eating but for those who have allergies to gluten and such, they can make noodles in a different way to enjoy their favorite dishes.

The spiralizers took right off when people realized that they could still have fantastic tasting pasta dishes on many diets and health restrictions, without having to take the noodles out of the menu.

Putting vegetable noodles in place of your everyday pastas in your pasta dishes have many of us very excited to try this guilt free eating and for those with food allergies they can enjoy pasta dishes again without worry.

You can still eat your spaghetti and meatballs, lasagnas, stir fry dishes, the list can go on and on without the extra carbs, added sugars and preservatives regular store bought pastas have.

Anything that you make with pastas or rice can now be replaced with a low carb delicious alternative with the spiralizer.  You can also use hard fruits such as, apples, melons, mangos, etc., to make delicious healthy desserts without the guilt.

Most diets these days have you going low carb, no carb or high carb but without the bad carbs that the breads and pastas are loaded with.  Using the spiral slicers to make healthy noodles makes dieting much easier to follow and stick with.

More About Electric Spiralizers

There are many spiral slicers to choose from since they were first introduced around 2014.  When they were first offered to the public the handheld versions where the most common to find.  Since they were first offered they have made them even better and easier to use by making them electric powered.

You will also find that not only have they improved by becoming electric, the variety of cutting disks have improved as well.  You can make spaghetti, ribbon cuts, thin angel hair, fettuccini noodles and more.

What Foods Can You Use With Electric Spiralizers?

You can use the spiral slicers to cut anything that is firm or hard texture.  Below are some examples of the foods that work very well to transform vegetables and fruits into noodles.

ApplesGinger
Pineapple (not fully ripe)Zucchini

The 5 rules to follow to know if you can spiral slice a particular fruit or vegetable are:

  1. Make sure it is at least 1.5″ in diameter

Here Are A Few More Questions You May Be Wondering About Before Buying An Electric Spiralizer

Are electric spiralizers worth it?

An electric spiralizer is worth it if you are looking for a healthier eating option without giving up your favorite foods or if you have food allergies that keep you away from pastas. Using the spiralizer to turn your favorite fruits and veggies into noodles is an excellent way to continue to enjoy your favorite pasta meals while incorporating lots of vitamins and minerals to your dishes.

What are the top vegetables people spiralize?

There are many veggies people like to spiralize, some of the favorite veggie noodles are:

  • Sweet potaotes
  • Broccoli stalks
  • Butternut squash
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Parsnips
  • Rutabaga

As long as the veggies and fruit you want to spiralize are firm then you can use them. If your fruits and veggies are of the softer variety such as oranges and tomatoes then they won’t work to be spiralized.

I hope you found the information that you need to make an informed decision before purchasing an electric spiralizer. If you have purchased any of the above options or any other brand please let us know what you thought/think about it below. Your opinion could help others make a better decision when purchasing the spiralizer. If you have any questions please leave them below. Thank you for visiting device gourmet, have a great day. 🙂

Aroma Rice Cooker Steamer 2024 Reviews

Aroma rice cookers are not only capable of cooking  rice but they are also capable of making  one dish meals all in the same pot.  These days with busy lifestyles it can be difficult to cook healthy meals quickly for our families.  The aroma rice cookers with the steaming baskets take the hassle right away.

What Can Aroma Rice Cookers Make?

The aroma rice cookers can make multiple things, they are good for so much more than just rice. Below are just some of the things you can prepare with your rice cooker/steamer in one:

  • Both brown & white rice
  • Steam veggies
  • Entrees that are in pouches (such as frozen that typically would go in the oven)
  • Chicken
  • Fish
  • Pork
  • Seafood
  • Beef
  • Risotto
  • Soups & Stews

How Do The Aroma Rice Cooker/Steamers Work?

  1. The rice cookers have a pot inside the units that set on top of a hot plate.  When the water is added to the inner pot, the heated plate brings the water to the boiling point.
  2. The boiling water becomes absorbed into the food, rice etc., and excess water that isn’t absorbed into the foods is turned into steam.
  3. The pots have a sensor on them that automatically shuts off when the water rises above the boiling point, 221* fahrenheit.
  4. When the pot senses that it is above the boiling point, it automatically reduces the temperature to the “keep warm” temperature.
  5. This keeps your foods from burning and keeps it warm until you are ready to serve.

Things to Remember When Cooking With The Aroma Rice Cooker/Steamers:

When you are cooking brown rice, it is recommended that you soak it in warm water before it is cooked.  With the cool touch Aroma rice cookers, you can put the brown rice into the inner pot with water and it will soak it for you before it starts to cook.  After it is done soaking in the boil bath, it will automatically turn on and start the cooking cycle.

The measurements for cooking your rice with the Aroma rice cookers is 6oz of dry rice for 1 cup of cooked rice.

In the pot style Aroma cookers, your white rice will take about 10 minutes for every 6oz that you add.  Brown rice will take about 20 minutes for every 6oz of dry rice to make 1 cup of cooked. The brown rice takes longer because of the boil bath before starting to cook.  With the Aroma cool touch rice cookers, the rice will take about 2 hours.

Another question that many people have is whether to add the rice or the water first to the rice cookers.  You will add your rice first, there are lines of measurements inside of the pots.  After you add your rice, fill to the line, (depending on how much you are making), with the water.  This will make sure that your rice is cooked perfectly and doesn’t come out soggy.

How Does The Aroma Rice Cooker Make Rice & Steam Food at The Same Time?

To be able to cook both rice and steam your foods at the same time, you will need one of the units that have the steamer tray with it.  Not all of the Aroma rice cookers come equipped with the steamer tray.

To cook both your rice and steam your veggies and/or meat at the same time is fairly simple.

  1.  Add your rice and then your water into the inner pot.
  2. When the time comes to add your veggies or meats to the rice cooker, place them onto the steamer tray, open the rice cooker and place the steamer tray into the unit.  Close the top of the unit and it will continue to cook/steam your food.
  3. Unplug your Aroma rice cooker and remove your foods when it’s time for you to eat.
  4. Unplug your Aroma rice cooker and remove your foods when it’s time for you to eat.
  5. The Aroma rice cookers do not have an on/off switch, so you will need to always unplug them when you are done cooking.

Cooking Guides For The Aroma Rice Cookers & Steamers:

Depending on the pot that you are purchasing, the pot style or the cool touch, the cooking times will vary.  The cooking times for the brown rice will differ but the white rice cooking times are the same with both units.

Aroma does not recommend that you cook less than 2 cups of rice in your rice cooker at a time.  This will ensure that you get your fluffy rice every time.

Below is the cooking guides for white rice.  Remember that you are using 6 oz of rice or 3/4 of a cup when it states 1 cup of rice.  I know it sounds strange, but this is how it is measured and honestly I really don’t know why.  If anyone else knows, please leave a comment below and share with us!

Below are the cooking times for steaming your veggies and meats

using the steamer tray that is included with some of the Aroma rice cookers.  You will put the steamer tray into the unit while your rice is cooking.  Remember that the rice will generally take longer than your rice to cook so it typically will need to be added after your rice has started cooking.

You won’t have that sticky rice, undercooked rice or overcooked rice anymore. The extra features that you can get with a rice cooker such as, steaming your meats and veggies at the same time or using the appliance as a slow cooker gives them a lot more uses in your kitchen as well.

Home Meat Slicer Guide Top 5 2024 Buyer’s Guide

Meat slicers are becoming more common in homes because of the wonderful benefits of slicing your own deli meats and cheeses yourself.  Meat slicers for the home are very affordable and extremely simple to operate.

Why Purchase a Home Meat Slicer?

Most of us grocery shop once a week and purchase enough deli meat and cheese to last us a week, well so we think.  How often do you come home after spending $20 or more at the deli just to have it go to waste?

It’s happened to me a lot, I would buy a pound of turkey, ham and cheese and even sometimes splurge on roast beef for $10 a pound, if it was rare enough.  I would always push everyone at home to eat the turkey and roast beef first so it didn’t go to waste, ham, salami and bologna always lasts longer.  Unfortunately, everything usually isn’t finished before going bad so I have to throw it out, money in the trash.

Save Money Buying a Home Meat Slicer

When I bought my meat slicer it not only was convenient, it has saved a lot of money in the last year because I can cook my own ham, turkey breast or roast beef at a fraction of the price of buying it at the deli.  I cut it all as thin or thick as I want and I don’t have a bunch of money going in the garbage anymore.

You can buy a boneless whole ham for about $12-$15, cook it the way you like it and slice it up just the way you want it.  A pound of ham is on average $6 a pound at the deli, you have at least a 5 pound ham for the $12-$15.

Freeze half of it or in quarters, even after it’s cooked, take it out and slice it as needed.  You can do the same with beef, poultry and even cheeses, just buy larger and freeze it.  The meats can easily be slow cooked in your crockpot for amazing flavors that are even better than the delis, not to mention much healthier without all of the preservatives.

Don’t just limit yourself with slicing deli meats and cheeses either!

You can use your meat slicers to cut larger pieces of meat from your butcher.  Buying your meats in bulk can save a lot of money.  Buy larger cuts of beef, pork, anything and cut it to what you want.

You can cut your own veal or chicken cutlets, pork chops, steaks, all at a fraction of the cost that you pay per pound in grocery stores.  The meat slicers definitely  pay for themselves in a very short period of time.

Here Are Some More Questions To Consider Before Investing In A Home Meat Slicer

Is it cheaper to slice your own meats & cheeses?

Yes, it is cheaper to slice your own meats and cheeses at home especially if you’re a family that enjoys sandwiches often. When you purchase deli meats and cheeses you are paying more to have them sliced than if you just bought it to do yourself, the deli counter worker needs to get paid. You can buy inexpensive cuts of meats, cook them to your liking and slice them up at a fraction of the cost. I like to buy my cuts of meats in bulk at Costco, cut them into smaller chunks, freeze them and take them out to cook and slice when we need it. It really doesn’t take much time to do and is very well worth the money we save.

How do you choose a meat slicer for your home?

First you need to decide how large the cuts of meats and cheeses will be that you want to slice. The trays of home meat slicers come in different sizes so make sure that they will be large enough to hold what you want to slice, safely and securely.

Is a manual meat slicer better than an automatic meat slicer?

This truly depends on what you want to cut with it and how much you want to cut.

If you are planning to cut many lbs of foods at one time often then you may want to consider and automatic meat slicer. An automatic meat slicer can be set for the thickness you are looking for and the amount that you want sliced at that specific thickness. You can then walk away and let it do the work for you, most automatic meat slicers have a holding tray, table that your foods will land on when they’re finished slicing.

If you aren’t planning on cutting a whole bunch of foods at one time and are thinking you may only cut a pound or two of meats and cheeses the manual meat slicer will work easily for you.

Another thing to consider when deciding on a manual or automatic meat slicer is if you have the ability to push the slicer back and forth while slicing your meats and cheeses.

What size meat slicer should I buy?

This totally depends on what you plan on cutting and the size you will be slicing for your meats and cheeses. The foods that you are going to cut need to be securely in place on the tray of the meat slicer. The meat slicer trays come in different sizes so make sure to choose one that can accomodate the size of the foods your going to use.

You will also want to consider the size of the blade that a meat slicer comes with. The blades can range from usually a 6″ up to a 12″ blade size. If you are planning on using it to cut wider meats and cheeses you should consider a larger blade size.

Thank you for visiting Device Gourmet, I hope we were able to help you make an informed decision about what meat slicer will work best at home for you and your family. If you have tried any of the above meat slicers or other models we don’t have listed, please share your experience about them with us.

If you have any questions or comments about any of the products we have listed, please leave them below. Have a great day 🙂

What Is A Cold Pressed Juicer?

A cold pressed juicer, also called a masticating or slow juicer, has a slower motor than a centrifugal juicer which reduces the heating levels of juice during the extracting process.   A cold pressed juicer takes more time to squeeze the natural juices from produce using an auger that slowly breaks down your produce before it’s pressed to separate the juice from the pulp.

What is a cold pressed juice?  A cold pressed juice refers to the finished product after the masticating slow juicer is finished pressing all of the natural juices and nutrients from your chosen ingredients.  Because a masticating slow juicer runs slow it actually keeps the fresh juice from becoming hot since the motor doesn’t heat up like a centrifugal juicer does.

Since your juice is extracted at a slower speed, along with minimal heat from the motor, you will have a more flavorful, nutrient rich juice.  Many people prefer the cold pressed juicers because of the higher nutrient levels they get from their produce along with the maximum juice being squeezed from the ingredients they use.

What is a Cold Pressed Juicers Benefits For You?

The 5 main differences between a cold pressed (masticating) juicer and a centrifugal juicer are:

  • Taste
  • Nutrient Levels
  • Juicing Capabilities
  • Juice Shelf Life
  • Saving Money

Let’s take a closer look at all of these differences so you can better understand why these 4 little things can make or break your choice of a slow juicer compared to a centrifugal juicer.

What’s the taste difference between a cold pressed juicer and a centrifugal juicer?

With a cold pressed juicer you will find a thicker juice and minimal foam when your juice is done.  Since the process of breaking down your produce is done at a slower speed and the auger(s) are breaking your produce down slowly before they are pressed to get all the juice from them, you are left with maximum juice from your produce.

Take a Look at The Video Below and See For Yourself The Difference Between Juicing With a Cold Pressed Juicer or a Centrifugal Juicer…

Having more of the juices squeezed from your produce gives you a much thicker juice compared to a centrifugal juicer.  A centrifugal juicer chops your produce at a much higher speed, about 80 rpm’s, and is immediately pushed against the strainer to separate your juice from the pulp.  This process not only causes your juice to become heated but a lot of the juices are left behind in a wet pulp instead of making it into your glass.  You are left with a thinner juice compared to the slow cold pressed juicers which means less flavor from your produce.

When your juice is done and makes it into your glass, you will find a higher foam level with a centrifugal juicer.  The slower process of the cold pressed juicer and the minimal heating from their motors  allows for an almost foam free juice when you’re finished.  You will also find that your juice won’t separate as quickly as a centrifugal juicers finished juices do.

What’s the difference between the level of nutrients between a cold pressed juicer and centrifugal juicer?

The heat that a centrifugal juicer produces causes a faster oxidation rate which in turn causes nutrients to be lost in your finished juice.  You may get a faster glass of fresh juice but if you’re looking for the maximum benefits of the enzymes, vitamins and minerals your produce has to offer, you won’t get as much of them with the centrifugal juicer.

You can see the difference in the finished juices below showing the juice separation with a fast centrifugal juicer compared to a cold pressed slow juicer.  These where simple tomato and orange juices made with both the centrifugal and cold pressed juicers.

The slow, cold pressed juicers give you the maximum levels of enzymes, vitamins and minerals found in your produce because of the time it takes to break your ingredients down before being pressed for their natural juices.  Since the motors don’t become excessively hot all of the nutrient levels you can get aren’t killed off before making it into your glass.

If you’re looking to get as much of the vitamins and minerals from juicing, you will want to stay aways from a centrifugal juicer and look into the masticating, cold pressed juicers.

What are the juicing capabilities of a cold pressed juicer compared to a centrifugal juicer?

A cold pressed juicer is capable of extracting juice from hard and soft produce along with your leafy greens and wheatgrass.  The auger(s) in the slow, masticating juicers break down everything you feed through the chute with ease.  The slow speed allows time for the harder juicing ingredients, such as spinach, kale and wheat grass, to be broken down very well before being pressed for the juices they offer.

A centrifugal juicer can break down leafy greens and wheatgrass but because of the fast rotating blades that break everything down, a lot of waste is left behind in the pulp that should have been juiced.  When  juicing leafy greens with a centrifugal juicer you will also find they become clogged quicker because they’re not broken down properly before being pressed for juice.

If you want to add green juice to your routine, you will really want to look into a slow, cold pressed juicers so you get the most out of your leafy greens and wheatgrass.

What’s the difference in the shelf life of your finished juice when using a cold pressed or centrifugal juicer?

You can store your finished juice up to 72 hours with a cold pressed slow juicer.  The juice from a centrifugal juicer should be drank within 24 hours after it’s finished.  Since a slow masticating juicer has minimal heating during the juicing process, the oxidation rate of the juice is much slower.  The high heat of a centrifugal juicer causes oxidation to be almost immediate from the time your juice makes it into your glass.

You will find your juice separating in less than a minute with a centrifugal juicer compared to days before the slow cold pressed juicers finished product begins to separate.  Not only does the juice loose vital nutrients from the heating of a centrifugal juicer but making larger batches of juice to enjoy for a few days isn’t recommended.

How will you save money with a cold pressed juicer compared to a centrifugal juicer?

The cold pressed juicer will get all the juice out of your ingredients, saving you money on expensive produce.  The centrifugal juicers will get a lot of juice from a variety of  produce, such as, apples, oranges, carrots and cucumbers but your leafy greens and wheat grass are left with a lot of waste in the pulp.

The cold pressed, slow masticating juicers allow you to use all varieties of fresh produce to make any juicing recipe your heart desires without wasting money on produce that has a lot of juice left behind.  You will also find many of the cold pressed juicers have other capabilities such as, making fresh sorbets, nut butters, baby foods and even the ability to grind meats or make fresh pastas.

What Is A Juicer And How Do They Work?

A juicer is a machine that extracts juice from your fresh produce and gives you all the vital nutrients that are lost with pasteurized juices you find at your local markets.

If you are looking for more information about the 2 types of juicers, centrifugal and masticating slow juicers just hit the links below to go straight to the information about what they are and how they work.

What Is A Juicer And How Do They Work?

A juicer will give you all the nutrients that your fresh produce has to offer without the loss through pasteurization like store bought juices do.

Pasteurized juices are heated to kill harmful bacterias such as e-coli and salmonella along with other disease causing germs, that can grow with time if left unpasteurized on store shelves.

When juices are heated to remove any harmful bacterias and germs they also lose some of the vitamins, minerals and other healthy nutrients that are found naturally in fruits, veggies and leafy greens.

A juicer allows you to get fresh juice loaded with all the natural vitamins, minerals and nutrients found in your produce.  Most of us take some sort of vitamin supplement daily to give our bodies what they’re lacking from our everyday diets.  Juicing can give your body what it needs naturally by simply making juices with produce that contain the vitamins and minerals you need.

Juicers separate the fiber from the natural juice found in your produce.  By doing this, when we drink our finished juice all of those vitamins and minerals are immediately put into our bodies.  When we eat our fresh produce, which is very healthy also, our bodies have to break down the fiber before we get the natural vitamins and minerals found in the produce.

How Do Juicers Work?

A juicer works by extracting juice from the produce you feed through the chute and separating the pulps from the natural juices in the produce your using.  The juice will flow right into one container while the pulp is pushed into another or left behind on the pulp filter.

There are 2 main juicing machines, the centrifugal and the masticating juicers.  Each of these extracts your juices differently and have good and bad advantages to them.

The positive to both juicer models is the fact that they give you nutrients immediately upon drinking your finished product compared to eating it and waiting for your digestive system to get all the nutrients into your body.

Let’s Take a Look at The 2 Different Juicer Systems

Centrifugal Juicers

The centrifugal juicer has a high speed motor that rotates quickly causing a centrifugal force.  The centrifugal force pushes your produce against a flat cutting blade right above a pulp strainer.  When your produce hits the flat blade it’s forced against the pulp strainer where your juice pushes through and the pulp is left behind.

The centrifugal juicers work quickly to get the fresh juice to your glass.  However, the fast rotation of the motor that’s needed to create the centrifugal force causes high heat which leaves your juice warm and some nutrients destroyed.

You will want to drink your juice from a centrifugal juicer quickly if you want the most nutrients from it.  The heat of the motor on these juicers will break your juice down quickly which kills nutrients if left for a period of time.

A centrifugal juicer works best with softer fruits and veggies such as, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, lemons, celery, cucumbers, etc..  You can use harder produce such as, ginger root, pomegranate, apples, etc., and you will get juice from them but a lot of pulp will be left behind that is moist.  When you’re left with wet pulp then you know juice didn’t make it to your glass.

Fresh leafy greens and herbs also have a bit of trouble breaking down into juice with the centrifugal juicers.  Since these are thinner and soft the centrifugal fast speed can rip them apart but leave a lot of whole pieces behind in the pulp basket and the juice isn’t extracted.

Masticating Juicers

The masticating juicers use a slower method of juicing your produce which reduces the heat of the motor allowing for more of the nutrients to stay in your finished juice, along with juice separation to be minimal.

A masticating juicers, also called a slow juicer or cold pressed juicer, uses and auger that slowly grinds your produce before it’s pressed through the pulp filter.

The grinding from the auger breaks your produce down into small pieces allowing the most juice to be pressed and sent to your glass.

The slower juicing method of the masticating styles not only gives you the most juice out of your produce but also creates a lot less foam along with higher preservation time.  You can take up to 72 hours to drink juice when using a masticating juicer without much loss of nutrients.

Using leafy greens, spinach, kale, parsley, wheat grass, etc., is not a problem with the masticating juicers.  They will be broken down much easier than centrifugal juicers without much waste left behind.  Your harder root veggies and fruits are also broken down easily with the slow juicers.

Masticating juicers are on the more expensive end but typically can do more than just juice.  Most masticating juicers will make fresh sorbets, smoothies, nut butters, nut milks and even pastas or grinding meats with some models.

The versatility with the slow masticating juicers are by far better than the centrifugal juicers.  Having the ability to use a juicer for more than just extracting juices is a nice feature.  Making fresh homemade peanut butter or almond milk plus fresh sorbets is a plus for those wanting a healthier life style.

Best Juicers For Home Use

Picking the best juicers for home use is not just about brands and costs. What matters is what you need from your juicer. There are a few things to consider when picking your juicer so you’re not just throwing your money away on something that doesn’t meet your expectations.

Let’s look at some important features that juicers do and don’t have to help you narrow down what is best for you!

What Types of Juicers Are There?

There are 2 main types of home juicers:

  • The Centrifugal Juicer
  • The Masticating Juicer (also referred to as the slow juicer or cold press juicer)

Both juicers have pros and cons to them but understanding what you will want from your juicer can make your decision and ability to find the best juicer for you much easier!

The centrifugal juicer is the most common juicer found in kitchens due to its lower price and fast speed of juicing.  These juicers usually start at about $100 making them affordable for everyone.

However these machines don’t deliver as many nutrients and leave a lot of juice behind in the discarded pulp. If you want to use leafy greens or fresh herbs, the centrifugal isn’t the best choice for you.

The masticating juicers are a little higher in price but offer more juicing capabilities than just squeezing juice from your produce.

Most masticating juicers can make nut butters, nut milks, fresh sorbets and baby foods.  This is a wonderful feature for those looking to incorporate more varieties of unprocessed foods into your diets.

Adding spinach, kale and other leafy greens along with fresh herbs into your juice is possible with the masticating juicers.  The slow speed and the auger systems allow you to get the most juice from your leafy greens.

The 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying Your Juicer

  1. How much of the nutrients from my produce will I actually get from my juicer?
  2. What is my price range?
  3. Do you just want to make simple juices or do you want the ability to make juices with leafy greens, wheat grass and fresh herbs?
  4. Are you looking to make fresh baby foods or nut butters, or the ability to make nut milks?

What Do You Want to Juice and How Much of The Nutrients do You Want From Your Juice?

If you are looking to just make some simple juices such as orange juice, pineapple juice or veggie juices, you will probably be perfectly happy with the centrifugal juicers.

This type of juicer is fast, easy and generally on the less expensive side of the juicer family. It’s capable of making simple juices without a problem and is great for you if you aren’t looking to make other things like nut butters.

The centrifugal juicers have a simple design. When you push your produce through the shoot it’s pushed against a flat blade,  The high speed from the motor causes a centrifugal force that pushes the cut produce against the strainer below.   The strainer keeps the produce pulp and waste in place while the juice is forced through and empties into a container.

Because of the high speed and simple components of the centrifugal juicers, they are not ideal for leafy greens. You could use them but you’ll be more likely to clog the strainer rather than get much juice from them. You will find large pieces of your leafy greens left behind to either be discarded or attempt to put back through the juicer.

Centrifugal juicers produce a high heat because of the fast motor needed to create a centrifugal force for juice extracting.  The higher heat causes your juice to have more foam and will break down very quickly.  You will also have a loss in vital nutrients from the heat but even with this, you’re still getting a lot more vitamins and minerals than you do with a store bought juice.

What if you’re looking to use all varieties of produce?

If you’re looking to use both hard and soft varieties of produce, along with leafy greens, wheat grass and fresh herbs, you’ll want to consider the masticating juicers.

The masticating  juicers have the ability to get the most juice out of all your produce because they don’t just cut and push your ingredients into juice like the centrifugal juicers do.

The masticating juicers work at a slower speed and use auger blades to chew and grind your juicing ingredients instead of being pushed against a flat blade and crushed like the centrifugal juicers.  Your juice may take a little longer to make but you can enjoy it up to 72 hours after your finished without loosing nutrients or finding your juice has separated.

What Do You Want to Make With Your Juicer and How Much Are You Willing to Spend?

Juicers come in a wide range of prices from $100 to over a $1000 to buy.   Depending on how much of a juicing enthusiast you are and what you want to make with your juicer will determine what you’re going to spend.

Many of the masticating juicers have the ability to not only make juice but grind coffee beans, make fresh butters, turn frozen produce into sorbets or smoothies, make baby foods, even create fresh nut milks, pastas or grind meats.

The centrifugal juicers are the least expensive and are perfect if you’re just looking to juice simple recipes without the use of leafy greens, wheat grass or fresh herbs.  They will work wonderfully to get a lot of juice from your basic fruits and veggies, just plan to drink your finished juice immediately after it’s done.  Making larger batches of juice at a time to consume later is definitely an option but there will be a loss of nutrients.

The masticating juicers have the ability to break down all types of fruits, veggies, herbs, leafy greens, wheat grass and nuts, giving you more versatility and uses for your juicer, just plan on spending a little more money.

You’ll spend at the least $150 on the low end for a good masticating juicer to as much as $1000 or more. If you want a juicer that can handle everything you want to make and not just simple juicing then you may want to consider a larger investment for your juicing machine.
